In Love With Lyrics.......

I have a strong passion towards good lyrics. A sudden spark in my mind to write something about the lyrics in tamil cinema.

Film song lyrics are sometimes the best form of poetry. Some classic Tamil film songs (80s Illayaraja) and very few modern songs have that perfect mix of evocative lyrics, brilliant music, and great themes.
There are some times, when you listen to a song and it makes you forget everything. Most of the times it is the melody or the tune that impresses people. But rarely, people are mesmerized by lyrics of the song. I am not an exception and there are some songs which came out recently (May b from late 90’s) rivet me by the beauty of their lyrics.

Ovoru pookalume” from Autograph and “Oh maname” from Ullam ketkume boost our confidence for sure. “Ini naanum naanillai” from Aei nee… beautifully penned by thamarai and composed by Srinivas himself is sure to make me blush. So is “Kannukku mai azhagu” from Pudhiya mugam and “Azhage sugama” from Parthale paravasam. “Narumugaye” from Iruvar and “Snekithane” from Alaipayuthe are the epitome of expressing love.

All the above songs have stellar lyrics that leap off and would carry the song even without their current spare arrangement of musical instruments. Though I like these songs in totality, there are other few which have a one or two lines of scintillating lyrics that personifies the whole song as such (in the order they released).

These lines from the film Valli that stole my heart, penned by Vairamuthu, given life by Swarnalatha

Kaalamendra Thaerae Aadidaamal Nillu
Ikkanathai Poalae Inbam Edhu sollu

Personification by Vairamuthu again, from the film Ratchagan, beautifully sung by Srinivaas

unnai mattum sumandhu nadanthal uyaram thooram theriyaathu
unmel vanthu oru poo vizhundhal ennal thaanga mudiyaathu

Who else could this be other than Vairamuthu for the film Mudhalvan

Neeraga naan irundhal un nethiyila na irngi
Koorana un nenjil kuthichu vanthu kudiyirupen
Aana veena ponene!

Sung beautifully by Kavitha krishnamurthy, these lines from 12B are truly fabulous

Nesathinaal yennai kondrividu,
Unn nenjukkuliyil yennai pothaithuvidu

Written by upcoming lyricist Palaninbarathy for Aei nee… do not fail to compete with well established lyricists

ulagengilum sugam ullathu athai vaangida panam ullathu manasu mayanguthu
ethukaaga? namakaanavan yaar enbathai nam kangalal naam thedanum manasu
mayanguthu athukaaga

Again by Vairamuthu for the film Ullam ketkume he definitely proves he is the best among the lot

adi paruva peNNae neeyum oru pangu sandhai poalae
sila yaetra iRakkangaL ada undhan maeni maelae

One of the most emotive lines I have come across so far, from the film 7G

paesi poana vaarthaigaL ellaam kaalam dhoaRum kaadhinil kaetkum
saambal kaRaiyum vaarthai kaRaiyuma

This song from the film Azhagiya theeye impressed me much. One amazing thing is that this whole song expresses love without using the word "love" or "kadhal" anywhere!!

Kaetkaadha Oasaigal Idhazh Thaandaadha Vaarthaigal
Imai Aadaatha Paarvaigal Ivai Naan Konda Maatrangal

This is from the latest film Dishoom…. Couldn find the lyricist tho

kadhal solla kaathiruken yedhupola?february maadhathukku naaLoNNu
koodivara

aandu naalu kaathirukkum adhu poalae...

Well….. These are just a few that make me go crazy!! Hope to share a lot more on music, lyrics, singers, etc...
Do post ur views …. :)

“Real love makes us unattached”?!!

I happened to read one of the famous lectures of Swami Vivekananda, "The Secret Of Work".
I think it requires lots of maturity to understand his works!
In this particular piece he has spoken about showing love to a job or a person yet being unattached to it!! This made me think a lot.
A few lines from it before I carve its impact on me…..

“Work but let not the action or the thought produce a deep impression on the mind.”

“Be unattached; let things work ; let brain centers work; work as if u were a stranger in this land; work incessantly but be not attached to it.”

“When u have succeeded in loving your husband, your children, the whole world , the universe in such a manner that there is no reaction of pain or jealousy, no selfish feeling , then you are fit in a state to be unattached.”

“Real love makes us unattached”

“Attachment comes only when we expect something in return.”

My question “Is this really possible?”
Practically speaking I don’t think love towards work or a person can make us unattached. But I feel it’s the opposite!!
Aren’t all of us are emotionally bonded to the person we like, especially our mom…..?
Does that mean if we are attached to somebody our love towards them is not true?
Does this mean we expect “something in return”?
Moreover I think love rather makes us more attached than otherwise…

May be time can answer these
questions…………….

M.O.P - a happening place!!

I wanted my 1st post to be something that is very close to my heart!

Ya.... my college days, of course! College days r special for almost everyone, but for me its a home away from home!

Life at M.O.P was truly fabulous, not jus for friends n fun but for the way it molded me into what I am today..

It made me rediscover myself with lots of opportunities n challenges. I think the amount of confidence n courage i have acquired today is definitely from my lecturers at M.O.P. who are my role models! I never knew they would be more friendly than my own friends :)

With a few more days left for my final semester xams to get over, my mind is full of nostalgic moments.... Can never get it bac!!
